Top Bathroom Trends in 2018

Top Bathroom Trends in 2018

I’m about to renovate my own bathrooms so I’ve been spending even more time than usual looking at toilets, vanities, tiles and so on.

Home trends come and go, so here’s what’s happening in bathrooms.

Baths

b4

  • Free standing baths in any material eg. acrylic, enameled steel, stone, etc in all shapes and sizes. Just make sure you have enough space around the bath to fit a broom and mop for cleaning. I recommend at least 150 mm of airspace on three sides.

TIP: If your space only allows for a built-in bath, consider a 100 mm tiled or stone top all around the bath and choose a bath with a thin lip for a more streamlined look.

Toilets

b1

  • Rimless bowl means no more hidden germs and it’s a lot easier to clean
  • Concealed cisterns where the cistern is behind the wall with just a flush plate, used to be only for small bathroom. Now the access is vastly improved when it comes time to repair something inside, they’re everywhere! The plumber can reach the main components by simply removing the flush plate.

Vanities

b2

  • Still wall hung but can look more like a custom designed piece of furniture.
  • Unique sinks and vessels to create a feature eg. stone, glass, metal.

Tiles

  • Are getting bigger, particularly for bathroom walls eg up to 600 x 1200 mm.
  • Are more shapely, and often in retro patterns as floor tiles and feature walls
  • Have rectified edges on glazed porcelain. Full-bodied porcelain tiles in anything other than block colours, are almost impossible to find at the moment as they are more expensive to make and then sell.

Taps & Fittings

  • There are still gold, copper and rose gold taps and fittings, however matt black is huge. Chrome is still the biggest seller though, because it never dates.

TIP: If you want more than 5 years longevity from a design perspective, out of your taps and fittings choose chrome.

  • Whatever your design style there are taps and fittings to suit.
  • Mixer taps are still the most popular as they can be operated with one hand. You can even find these in a traditional/classic style.

Technology

b6

  • Handsfree is the latest trend with motion sensors on taps, toilet flush and seat/lid closers and of course the room lights.
  • Toilets that convert to a bidet.
  • Toilets and showerheads that are lit with LED lights and change colours.
  • Wet rooms with a whole body shower/steam/massage system.
  • Your choice of music in the bath and shower via bluetooth.
  • Wall mounted waterproof TV’s in the bathroom.
